Russian President Vladimir Putin took issue with the idea of American exceptionalism in the New York Times this week:
It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.
In a letter sent to Putin, Heritage Foundation President Jim Demint explains that while all men are created equal, not all governments are.
And to ensure Putin understands why America is exceptional, DeMint enclosed a copy a Heritage booklet on the topic. It’s entitled, appropriately, Why Is America Exceptional?, and you can read it on Heritage.org. You can purchase a pack of 20 booklets from the Heritage bookstore.

What do you think? Is America exceptional? Or is Putin right?
