After a tragedy like mass shooting happens, liberals flood the internet and news media with claims that making firearms illegal and abolishing the 2nd Amendment is the answer. The left makes emotionally charged arguments, arguing that innocent victims “could have been spared” if guns were illegal.

But Heritage expert Patrick Terrell points out that the numbers just don’t add up. Criminalizing the possession of firearms in America does not correlate to a reduction in homicides. In fact, according to a study by the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, the relationship goes the other way.

Heritage graphic

From 1986 to 2012, the production of new firearms in the U.S. increased dramatically.  During the same time period, criminal homicides in the U.S. decreased. Their study concludes that gun bans are ineffective because they “do not affect the socio-cultural and economic factors that are the real determinants of violent crime rates.”

Do you think gun control is the solution to reducing homicides in America?

Definitely not. The heart of the matter is the matter of the hear!

Jerry Metcalf - April 8, 2016

No infringement, period

Lawrence Lafary - April 8, 2016

Hell no!!!

Jan Toles - April 8, 2016

The only thing that gun control ensures is that criminal’s will have all of the guns, and law abiding citizens can be controlled by their government!

T. R. Sartori - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not. I firmly believe that if private citizens cannot own guns or legally carry guns, the only ones that will have guns are criminal or non-law abiding persons.

Steve H. - April 8, 2016

No

Doris Bernhardt - April 8, 2016

What will it take to awake people to the fact: gun control only takes guns from the honest and upright citizenry of any nation. The crooks and dictators will always have guns, making the rest of us helpless. Every country that gave up their guns fell to those who wanted to control it citizens.

Roy F. Wilt - April 8, 2016

The only reason for Gun Control is to take away Weapons from the Citizens of the United States! Every Dictatorship of the 20th Century, First took the Guns, then they started Killing People!

Lawrence R. Whalley - April 8, 2016

Solutions to killing is arming the populace and removal of all gun free zones. Mass killings only occur where the populace is disarmed.

In Illinois a sign on the door removes our second amendment rights from us so that concealed carry in Illinois is a fraud and a joke.

Dallas Dagenais - April 8, 2016

Gun control is part of the reason for homicides in the US whereas increased gun ownership by law abiding citizens results in fewer homicides by law breakers.

Glen Straker - April 8, 2016

The intolerance of the left is blatantly demonstrated by our courts, college campuses, media, etc. If the leftist lunatics are not dealt with soon, America will be like Europe, the Middle East, and the rest of the world….UNLIVEABLE!!!!!

Martin Gomez - April 8, 2016

Illiberals only go after guns because they cannot discuss the real reason for crime — the people themselves — and because disarming the law abiding public is key to subjecting it to tyranny. The Founders wisely baked this protection into the BoR.

Robert Koonce - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not, Homicides will be committed by those seeking to do so , no matter what weapon is available.Take the UK for example, They have begun to restrict kitchen knives at this point simply due to the fact that guns are no longer available, and knife attacks have risen so dramatically because of that fact. Even if every known weapon is banned, those who have a little apptitude can build one of their own. I mean for cryin’ out loud, a piece of 3/4″ iron pipe, a pipe cap , a spring and a nail can create an effective shot gun . What would be the next step? NFA registration for plumbing supplies?

John D. Watts - April 8, 2016

Whether its Gun Control, knife control, bat control or food control, Control of Law Abiding Citizens is deadly to Human Nature. What needs to be controlled is power over others that extreme amounts of money allows. See my blog below, that introduces a path between Communism and Capitalism.

Gerald Dominick - April 8, 2016

Absolutely NOT. Just take a look at those countries around the world who have removed guns from the population under the guise of reducing gun-related homicides , and you see the results – homicides increase, not decrease. The above statistics support this.

Albert P. Bushey - April 8, 2016

Gun control does not reduce crime. Quite the opposite is true. During the Obama Administration, the buying of guns and training of gun use by civilians has increased dramatically largely due to fear of the federal government by the American people. A disarmed people is a controlled people, e.g. Nazi Germany.

Robert McWain - April 8, 2016

No, if I want a gun or need one I’d buy one.

USmade - April 8, 2016

Absolutely NOT. Gun control is NOT the answer. We should try to get as many Americans as possible to be gun owners. We need more training-shooting ranges, and gun procedure classes.
I wish everyone was a gun owner! It would solve a lot of this hogwash about the current citizens that choose to protect themselves.

Harlan Abernethy - April 8, 2016

If anyone knows History, we should remember what Hitler did when he dis-armed the German Population before
WW II. The citizens had no way to protect themselves and were killed by their Dictator, Hitler.
Progressives think they have to control the population and there in lies the same mindset of Hitler. Should we lose our second amendment rights the same thing will happen to the United States. Obama knows this and he is so control hungry, he will try anything he can to control the U.S. population. God forbid this situation or we are all doomed.I personally don’t understand why the GOP has not seen fit to impeach this POTUS for all of the illegal problems he has created that endanger our citizens including of the non vetted illegals and killers and third world medical problems. We do nothing to stop him and his illegal actions and then we flush him with the peoples money to do with as he wishes with no recourse, and be damned the U.S.Citizens.It’s really a disgrace to our citizenry. . . .

Patty Woolsey - April 8, 2016

I do not think that restricting guns is the answer. We wrote the following letter to the Editor of the Wall Street Journal, but it was not published:
We applaud Dr. Kirkman’s letter to the editor published 10/7/15 regarding the “untoward results” the serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs have on a small percentage of patients. We are disappointed that Tim Murphy’s editorial two days later on “Mass Shootings and a Mental-Health Disgrace” makes no mention of these drugs.

In those cases where the media has reported the medications used by a perpetrator of mass shootings, an SSRI or other similar drug is generally involved. These drugs, while beneficial to millions, have bad side effects that cause violent behavior in some users. We fear the media is not inclined to investigate or report on this matter because the pharmaceutical industry advertises so heavily that the media would not dare risk the wrath of the industry by exposing these drugs as being involved in most of the violent mass shootings. Either SSRI and similar drugs need to be replaced with safer alternatives and/or nutritional deficiencies (such as magnesium) need to be addressed, or society needs to try to keep guns out of the hands of users of these drugs.

Joe Piantedosi - April 8, 2016

One thing that also needs to be mentioned is during that same time period of the Harvard study focus there has been an increase in mandatory sentences for criminals which has taken them off the streets reducing crime. More gun control is not the answer. The focus needs to be on criminals and the culture that breeds them.

Shirley Miles - April 8, 2016

NO

Carol Hill - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not, only the criminals
Would have guns because they donot obey any laws and it would leave us to vulnerable

Gary Newton - April 8, 2016

Guns do not kill people without people holding them. The only way to prevent killings is to change the way people feel about others. People today do not have respect for life or others. All they care about is themselves.Until people learn respect and care about life no matter what happens with gun control lives will continue to die.

velma steele - April 8, 2016

No gun control is not the solution for ending gun violence in America bit instead the mentally ill should get treatment and guns should stay out of their hands. Mental illness is the problem not guns. Gun owners need their guns to protect themselves and by banning guns is not the solution to the problem.

Gary Kelley - April 8, 2016

I believe that gun related crime is greatest in the cities with the most restrictive policies. I, for one, feel less safe in “gun free zones.” So I won’t patronize businesses with those policies. I personally wish more people were able to conceal carry. I know most criminals would disagree.

gail - April 8, 2016

No. A stronger justice system is needed. Stronger sentences are needed. Criminals should have zero rights. They should not have tv’s, cd players and all that other stuff to make them all comfy and cozy in their new hotel.

Doris Dale - April 8, 2016

Guns do not kill people, people kill people.

Paul D’Aigle - April 8, 2016

In areas where guns are heavily regulated, like Chicago, homicides are much higher than areas, like Dallas, where control of guns is much reduced and homicides are low. Gun control never helps the victim.

Anne Woods - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not! Again, it’s parents and the educational systems that are at fault for not teaching Responsibility for your Actions and words! All that destruction in Ferguson should have been cleaned up and paid for by those who committed the actions, even work gangs overseen by the National Guard & if those ruffians still wouldn’t behave, perhaps public “spanking of the butt” instead of slapping the hand & gov’t pay for the crime, & then more public work time until the crime was paid for.

john vasko - April 8, 2016

Many studies have shown that increasing gun ownership by law-abiding citizens has resulted in falling crime rates. Chicago is the opposite case where mainly criminals have procured weapons, usually illegally.

Dennis Ray Smith - April 8, 2016

Our society at large has a massive mental health problem, more gun laws will accomplish nothing to reduce crime. Enforcement of existing law, and treatment of social ills is the answer.

Nancy Moody - April 8, 2016

I believe the more responsible Americans who own guns the less homicides we will have. You only have to look at the places where mass shooting occur – they are gun free zones. If people had guns in these places, the shooters would think twice about trying to kill people there.

Charles LaFayette - April 8, 2016

Gun control is just another way of controlling the citizens.

Marilyn - April 8, 2016

I DO NOT think gun control stops gun crimes!!! I DO NOT think gun control is a good policy!!!

Charles LaFayette - April 8, 2016

Adolph Hitler said, words to this effect:
To control the citizens you must have all the guns. Not the exact words but the meaning is the same.
The Japanese hiarchy was asked why Japan didn’t invade the United States after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the answer was that ” there are as many guns in America as there are blades of grass”. That’s a close quote.

Roderick Wells - April 8, 2016

The lefts attack on the second amendment has nothing to do with public safety. It has everything to do with public control, and always has no matter the regime, no matter the time period.

Gary Ostlund - April 8, 2016

Do you think gun control is the solution to reducing homicides in America?

Abssolutly not, conceal carry can go a long way to people not knowing who is armed and who is not. A very good deterrent to crime.

William R. Messner - April 8, 2016

Yes I do. I think the better you can control your gun the more accurate you are. Thus in turn the better chance you have of killing bad people when needed.

Mary Wilkinson - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not! I recently obtained my concealed carry permit. Perhaps someday some unsuspecting thug will find themselves confronted with my lethal protection. Criminal will always have guns
and the liberal mindset will only become convinced of the value of legal possession of firearms if they ever have the need to protect themselves or their loved ones. Give up the right to bear arms and we can kiss our freedoms goodbye. President’s justice nominee to Supreme Court would see to that!

Linda Shields - April 8, 2016

Laws are only followed by good law abiding citizens. New laws does nothing to stop the shootings. If someone is determined to do mass shootings nothing will keep them from finding the weapons needed and age is not a factor.

Joaquin Padilla - April 8, 2016

Criminals won’t follow gun laws anyway. Better arm people for self-defense!

douglas Day - April 8, 2016

Gun freedom will reduce homicides in America
Taking away or restrictioning gun rights Iwill impower those who are not going to obay the laws anyway.
By along citizens defend them selves will slow the lawless down, if they think there’s a chance of retaliation.
At this time unlawful persons can do their dirty work against a citizen and have a 50 / 50 chance
At freedom. Thanks to our liberal judges

Al Tallant - April 8, 2016

ABSOLUTELY NOT! FACTS SHOW THE OPPOSITE!
THEY HAVE TO CONFISCATE OUR GUNS TO CONTROL US-WHICH IS THEIR GOAL!

wayne - April 8, 2016

No

William Wolfe - April 8, 2016

In several countries that have removed gun ownership from their populations, home invasions, assaults, and rapes have all increased. The criminals have weapons because they are criminals and they know in these countries that they do not have to be concerned about individuals protecting themselves.

Glenda Alley - April 8, 2016

No, gun control will not reduce homicides. If the “bad guys” know there may be a gun aimed right back at them, I believe they will be less likely to use it irresponsibly. The liberals have incorrect thinking.

Kendall Foreman - April 8, 2016

Absolutely not. If guns are taken away
from law abiding citizens, only the
criminals will have them. By definition,
they ignore the law.

Jean Ross - April 8, 2016

No body on your fictional “left” want to make guns illegal or take anyone’s 2nd amendment rights away. 90 % of all Americans of every political stipe want sensible gun legislation like universal background checks to keep those with a history of mental instability & violent backgrounds from purchasing guns. After every tragic mass shooting gun fanatics rush out and buy more guns and ammo. We are awash in guns and the gun manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank. People could find more practical things to spend their money on.

Peter Lowry - April 8, 2016

Gun control is the liberals way to take away our freedoms. The tyranny of the left is only possible when they have absolute control.

S - April 8, 2016

All gun control laws do is burden the law abiding citizens and infringe upon their 2nd amendment rights. Criminals don’t care or abide by gun control laws. There is more than enough current gun control laws on the books that if were enforced to the letter of the law would reduce crime significantly. All gun control is pro criminal.

David B. - April 8, 2016

Whether “gun control” lowers homicide rates or not (it doesn’t) is irrelevant to the government’s ability to infringe upon my God-given right of self-defense and ability to defend against that same tyrannical government. Progressives either do not understand history or willfully ignore it: every governmental genocide has been preceded by confiscation of weapons. This is one issue upon which I will give my life to defend, for arguing about after the fact becomes quite irrelevant.

Andrew ( Andy) Lawson - April 8, 2016

I do not think that today’s Liberal leadership invisions that gun control will have an appreciable positive effect on homisides in America. I do think that today’s Liberal leadership invisions a nation of people who could be easier to control and be governed if they have no way to defend themselves.

Malvin D. Luke - April 8, 2016

no look at Chicago

Mimi Shanahan - April 8, 2016

I don’t believe that gun control will reduce homicides.

Jonathan Hussey - April 8, 2016

The Swiss have it pretty close to right. Gun ownership should not be mandatory but it should be encouraged.

Debra - April 8, 2016

No, gun control will not effect people that get their fire arms illegally just the honest folk.

Bruce Williams - April 8, 2016

I have not heard of any theaters that allow concealed carry being shot up by any one! I wander why? I wander why when someone that saves the day because he was carrying, never makes the news!!

gordon williams - April 8, 2016

OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!

William Koontz - April 8, 2016

“An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.”
― Robert A. Heinlein, Beyond This Horizon

Before guns, people used swords, knives, daggers, rocks, clubs, and you name it to commit murder. Guns have added a new tool that those so inclined have used to murder others, but so have bombs, and automobiles. What hasn’t changed is human sinful nature! A long time ago in 1966, when I was a younger man, I began carrying a gun as a police officer at work and wherever I went. It became a habit, second nature if you will, that continues to this day. I’ve never shot anyone and fervently hope that I will never have to. I personally have never met a police officer anywhere that actually wanted to shoot anyone. That was something that we hoped everyday would never happen, while being aware that it was always a real possibility. That’s been my experience and observations.

Annette Broyles - April 8, 2016

Citizens need to have guns as protection from threats of harm and from government over stepping the rights of the of the citizens..

Farrell Childers - April 8, 2016

The price of Freedom requires a constant vigil no one enslaves another without first giving up a part of their own Freedom. this is even more so today, than ever before.

John Aviles - April 8, 2016

No way is the Left correct on bans! They ignore that criminals are armed and they won’t be turning in there weapons, so if you ban mine, as a law abiding citizen, I’m defenseless. Better I have a fighting chance until police arrive. Clearly, the areas with stricture gun control have higher crime; can’t be denied…except to the illiberal!

Steve - April 8, 2016

A good guy with a gun is always a good thing. I believe an effective judicial system with proper incarceration would be better at curbing the killing and abuse.

Werner Halbeck - April 8, 2016

Switzerland has gun possession a requirement and the lowest homicids as a nation. If every person was armed, there be far fewer mass killings.

Dr Jessie Hummel - April 8, 2016

Follow the State of Mississippi’s lead in striking down the insistent hammering of the Governments long reach. I should be the battle cry of every state in the Union to nullify the reach of the bigots

Don Wheeler - April 8, 2016

I am unwilling to make a direct correlation between the number of guns in private hands and the number of homicides.

JoAnn Ison - April 8, 2016

NO, NO, NO!

Marvin Griffith - April 8, 2016

Gun control will not reduce homicides in America. It will increase homicides. If everyone carried a gun, a murderer would think twice before deciding to kill someone. This is similar to the drug problem. Making drugs illegal does not stop them from coming into the country and being used. Likewise, making guns illegal will not stop them from coming into the country and into the hands of criminals. With law abiding people de-armed, criminals can have their way with anyone.

C. R. Dunbar - April 8, 2016

No. Just look at each State that allowed concealed carry. The violent crime rate dropped.

Caroline woodis - April 8, 2016

As the article shows (and common sense as well), abundance of guns in the hands of law abiding citizens drives violent crimes downward. As sanctioning cities shows, if there is nothing to deter violence, it flourishes. There is a strong correlation here.

Jeremy. Wales - April 8, 2016

No, it’s not even close to the answer. The graph here speaks for itself. It threatens our God-given right. We could also look at Australia. When they banned guns there were so many crimes that shot up, dramatically. Probably, due to the fact that criminals knew they wouldn’t face any opposition.

Paul Rego - April 8, 2016

The liberal establishment utilizes misdirection, either intentionally or ignorantly, to deflect from the failure of liberal policies to put a dent in the crime-ridden communities in many of our major, historically democrat run, cities. Rather than deal straight up with lawlessness and welfare dependency they double down on gun control. In so doing they are making a bad situation far worse while at the same time squandering valuable public resources on failed remedies.

Myrtle C Delaney-Kipfer - April 8, 2016

No, I do not. We have enough gun laws now. If the public is disarmed. there is no way for us to protect ourselves from a tyrannic government, riots for food and water like we hear will be coming. Frankly, the tyrannic government scares me more than the riots. The more guns taken away from law-abiding citizens, the more will be in the hands of the people who do perpetrate the murders and armed robberies and any other gun violent crimes. This is stupidity. When our government wants to disarm us, they only do it so we can’t turn on them. Take the only power we have against their manipulations for self-gain and power. This is a very dangerous situation and not enough people take it seriously. I want to scream sometimes when I see the complacency and apathy of the people. They don’t even know they are being taken advantage of. Sorry for the bad grammar. Guns are not the problem. Bad people are. Government is the worst.

Charles LEE - April 8, 2016

GUN CONTROL IS NOT THE ANSWER.

Byron Boan - April 8, 2016

Taking guns away from citizens is one of the first steps a Dictator does in order to control the people.

Edward Wilbur - April 8, 2016

All you have to do is look at Australia’s data after gun confiscation. All gun related crime is up significantly.

Renee Szabo - April 8, 2016

More law abiding citizens owning guns is the way to reduce homicides.

Craig - April 8, 2016

Liberal calls for gun control seem ironic, in that their disdain for personal responsibility is a large part of the cause for any rise in gun violence.

Wayne lambert - April 9, 2016

Criminals will get guns no matter what.we need guns to protect us.

MJ Burgess - April 9, 2016

Absolutely not!

Sandra Lampert - April 9, 2016

the left will never give up their imagined right to control and shove their beliefs down the throats of conservative peoples. This all figures in with their desire of global government, reduced population, and control and punishment of the right if they don’t comply. This is why they stir up the people with one crises after another all the time. They chip away at the rights of speech and thoughts, do not allow discourse on matters that need debate and proof. The also need to get rid of Christianity if they are to accomplish their goals;

Sandra Lampert - April 9, 2016

Any thinking person knows gun control is not the solution. The problem is the left know they cannot control the people unless they disarm them.

Lynn Van Campen - April 9, 2016

The relationship of your spike in “quantity of firearms” in 2012 vs. homicides is not as apparent a correlation as might have been reflected if coupled with 2013 homicide data, which are not shown. Why have you not presented “homicides” for 2013? Please note, I do NOT believe there is likely a positive correlation–but many do, and your data as presented here would not convince them otherwise.

Jean Rayl - April 9, 2016

No. If we outlawed guns then only outlaws would have guns. The liberals want to control everything in our lives and in the end we will lose all our freedoms. We must not let the Democrats win in 2016. They will finish what BO is already doing. We need a strong leader to grow the economy and the military. We need Christians to stand strong for everyone and to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. We need someone who will follow The Constitution, love the USA and be a strong man like Reagan was.

Art - April 9, 2016

Gun control is not the answer. Hollywood needs to stop glorifying killing people and
any person using a gun in the commission of a crime should receive a mandatory 10 year sentence.

Ken - April 9, 2016

Proven facts are a armed safety trained a law abiding public are the biggest factor in decreasing violence not increasing violence

Billie Moore - April 9, 2016

In answer to the question…”No.”

jared farney - April 9, 2016

NO!!!
BTW gun control is: Finger off the trigger, firm two hand grip, only point gun at intended target.
A concealed carry permit, valid in every state, would be excellent.
People who commit violent crime with a gun, tend to us a stolen or black market gun, unlike the tens of millions of responsible registered gun owners who do not commit violent crime.

Lula Broome - April 9, 2016

No! Irregardless of the attempt to try to take away our rights to own our guns the thugs and criminals still find guns in the streets to commit their crimes. We have the right to be able to defend ourselves or either use the guns for hunting purposes.

Janice Killian - April 9, 2016

Gun Control does not work for Americans, but only work for the crooks and crazies.

vivian fleitman - April 9, 2016

Yes, no one should own a gun, some one will lose it and start a killing spree. Lookat what’s been happening, never in my life have i heared of so many murders.

Rick Hand - April 9, 2016

No. But it is the solution to taking away all of our freedoms in America. History shows that when our guns are gone, so is our freedom and liberty. Government is free to do whatever they want to do to us without fear of retaliation.

Patrick Pignataro - April 9, 2016

Yes the person in control of his gun and his emotions can control the outcome of a situation

Mrs. Dorothy C Wiman - April 9, 2016

I agree that forcing us to give up our guns will help no one. The criminal, however, will still be able to get guns. We are law abiding citizens, pay our taxes, and work very hard for what we have. I wonder whether our government is trying to disarm the law abiding citizens in America in order for them to take over and destroy us at will. One thing we must remember, though, is that the one and only true God, whom we call Father, Lord Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit, will take our guns and everything else if we do not return to Him. His Ten Commandments have been rejected by America. It is not all about us. It is not all about what we want out of life. It is about what He wants. We have been blessed beyond imagination, yet we have forgotten from Whom our blessings flow.
We need not expect continued blessings from Him unless we return to Him. He will save His people, though, in spite of what the government does. If He is drawing this whole thing to an end, so be it. We who love and trust Him as Savior and Lord will be taken to Heaven to live with Him forever in joy, love, peace, and worship, where there is no more death, crying, suffering or pain. Those who have died believing in Jesus as Savior and Lord, or those Christians who are alive when He returns will all be together with Him. As for our beloved America, we have been warned. We have had wake-up call after wake-up call. If it is too late for us as it appears so many times, with our students being so disrespectful to authority, human life devalued below animals, mass murders, total rejection of our wonderful God, just to mention a few, so be it. Our existence is totally up to God. I still believe that staying strong as private, lawful citizens, and having strong leaders who respect life, a strong military, and punishment for criminals is a must if we are to remain a decent society.

Jack N Moore - April 9, 2016

I have nothing new to add to this idiotic age old arguement. Gun are safe except in the hands of those who would use them for wrong. Almost every recent incident has shown that the person using the gun had already been observed as being mentally lacking, but no one did anything and it progressed. Maybe we should look to penalize these people when we can prove it could have been prevented had someone notified the proper authorities. We would also have to provide a place for these people to report these situations when they exist. Thanks jack moore

Bill Sinclair - April 9, 2016

Socialists fuel gun control through tragedies committed by radical, unstable individuals. Disarming law-abiding, patriotic Americans mirrors the tactics of Marx, Hitler, Lenin, Soros, etc.

John Shivler - April 9, 2016

Gun control or limiting the peoples ability to bear arms only leads to more victims for the criminal element to prey upon.

John W Bletsch - April 9, 2016

The Second Amendment guarantees our God given right to self defense and protection from tyrannical government. The Government Administration we have right now is the reason for the Second Amendment. The answer to criminals is for the criminals to fear their intended victims who may be armed. Every physically and mentally able citizen should be by duty to be armed at all times. These days with the very real threats it is appropriate to be armed.

Dennis M Fries - April 9, 2016

Gun control doesn’t work, and will never work. Criminals will still get guns and if they have them they will use them to commit more crimes. The fact that they are criminals means they don’t obey the laws. More individuals with guns will mean the criminals will be less likely to do their crime when they think the target has a gun. Look at Plano, Texas.

Jon Hanson - April 9, 2016

I think that there is a lack of discussion on gun control. We have laws limiting many weapons. Mass shootings are not acceptable. When open minded discussion is shut down and we don’t have a chance to even talk about it, I feel hopeless.

Carla Toby - April 9, 2016

What is labeled “gun control” always means the same thing to the left; the elimination of private ownership of guns. In other words, an egregious violation of the 2nd Amendment. Without the 1st Amendment, there would be no 2nd Amendment. And without the 2nd Amendment there is no “people’s” defense against the tyranny of government. An armed militia–the purpose of the 2nd Amendment–what protection do we, the people, have against a government that decides to dispense with the Bill of Rights and become a dictatorship? Answer: none. It’s hardly the first time in history that a government has attempted to remove access to weaponry from the hands of the populace. Scotland and Japan under the Emperor come to mind.

Barbara Brenneman - April 9, 2016

It is the heart of men, not their guns that is the problem.

Jim Aughinbaugh - April 9, 2016

Gun Control is not about crime.
It is about control of the people.
If you are not armed, you cannot resist when the government wants to take something from you.

Fred Allen - April 9, 2016

Yes if the true use of the words! Use both hands and the front sight! No in fact is not about guns, it is about control. Like Hitler said after disarming Germany, “this is the safest time in Germany.” But he did not day won it was safest. Hmm,just sayin

Fred Allen - April 9, 2016

…. but did not say whom….

Carl Taylor - April 9, 2016

NO, I have heard that the Germans in the thirties had guns. Guns were registered. Guns were confiscated. HOLOCAUST.
Can you verify that that is true?.

David Lopez - April 9, 2016

I believe we should return to our Constitution and the bill of Rights. Having a gun does not make you a criminal-misuse of the guns does.

Jose Lopez - April 9, 2016

Criminals and Tyrants don’t give a damn about gun laws. Gun Controls only affect the Law Abiding Citizen – negatively.

Florence Murphy - April 9, 2016

No, I do not believe that gun control is the answer to the problem. It is the liberal belief that I am free to do whatever I want and the inablility to recognize and respect the rights of others that is one of the causes of gun violence.

Robert Dell’Orfano - April 9, 2016

No I don’t believe gun control will do anything to stop the inner city violence!
I should know I live in a city where the police are corrupt! And someone gets shot or killed every other day. And I tell you sir I will fight until the death to have the right to bare arms I will be on the front line ready to die.!

Timothy R. Buttner - April 9, 2016

It is established fact that actually enforcing existing firearms laws can do more to stop “gun violence” than anything else, especially in the Liberal-controlled cities like New York, where the Stupid Heads are running the other way…

Stephen Kawulia - April 9, 2016

Absolutely not. A disarmed citizen is a vulnerable citizen. We have a responsibility to protect ourselves and our loved ones, and I don’t mean by calling 911 and hoping help will arrive on time.
Every dictatorship has always first disarmed its citizens to eliminate the possibility of dissent, and I see that being attempted in this country. History is a great teacher, and if we fail to recognize its lessons we will repeat the mistakes of the past.

Alice Pellicciotti - April 9, 2016

NO!!! It is already against the law to kill someone unless it is in self defense. If someone does not honor the law not to kill, why would anyone expect them to honor gun control laws???? It seems to me that all gun control laws would accomplish, would be to take guns out of the hands of
law abiding citizens and protect criminals who will get them anyway!!!! Sorry, I have no desire to see their life of crime made easier or safer!!!!
Alice Pellicciottiww

Don & Bonnie Sappington - April 9, 2016

No, gun control is not the answer. Capital Punishment for “homicides…out and out murder,” is the answer to stopping the slaughter of Americans. If Americans guns are taken, we will have another Hitler nation, and ISIS will be right there with those monsters.

Charles Fickling - April 9, 2016

Enforcing laws already on the books and promoting capitalism instead of Government entitlement programs will reduce homicides.

Larry Lancaster - April 9, 2016

Maintaining our second ammendment rights is paramont! If all good Americans were armed and the corrupt justice system would support freedom and self reliance, crimes would likely dissapear.

Stephan Starkey - April 9, 2016

Gun Control is just plan wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The LEFTIST-SOCIALIST need to back off before there is an uprising of the American People. The SECOND AMENDMENT is a Constitutional Right of the (Citizens) of the United States; CITIZENS in the truest form.

David Adkisson - April 9, 2016

Anyone pushing “gun control” or outlawing guns are just trying to take away rights that the founding fathers used to try to preserve the longevity of this nation. The other basic rights that are not to be “messed” with are freedom of speech and religion. We need a government whose platform is to stand by the Constitution – Period! Remember – might doesn’t make right, but being right makes might!

Bill Calvert - April 9, 2016

To answer the stated question—“NO”.
It’s sad that the fact of the matter (any matter) has no effect on the uninformed masses. Perception is easily established among those that do not bother to listen and become educated on both sides of an issue, and choose the common sense side.

B L - April 9, 2016

NRA controlled Conservatives should cease equating liberalism with “taking away guns.” That is simply not the way liberals think. Liberals want to make sure that when guns are sold to individuals that the individuals are not felons or criminals nor are they mentally incompetent or unstable. Personally, I would also support a test of the purchaser’s ability to handle his/her weapon of choice in a safe and responsible manner. Gun Show loopholes for sales should be closed. When the free market allows dangerous products to be sold to any buyer with the money to purchase, the freedom of the vast majoirty of people to live safely and without fear is disrupted. A handful of arms manufacturers which already make enormous profits from government contracts have no need to minimize the right of innocent civilians to live without fear.

B L - April 9, 2016

Patrick Terrell has shown a single statistic that does not fully address the issue. For example, are arms sold to the military included in his graph of firearm sales? What kind of firearms are included? How are criminal homicides defined here? Do criminal homicides include mass homicides, murders that have not been solved, etc? The data shown is insufficent for the conclusion. proffered

John DelVecchio - April 9, 2016

Gun control is not the solution to reducing homicides in the US. Those who obtain illegal weapons are the main abusers of firearms. The more government insists on gun control the more people (lawabiding) will obtain their weapons legally as they always do.

Pauline Blanka - April 9, 2016

No!

Janet - April 9, 2016

Criminals will get guns no matter what restrictions are put out there. Drunk drivers kill people when they drive drunk. Soooo, let’s ban automobiles because they kill. Let’s ban pocket knives because they can be opened and stability someone. Mental health issues and over medicating are the problems. Guns do NOT pull their own trigger. Start researching the violent movies, games, TV shows and “music.” Uh, that could be what causes unstable minds to pull triggers. Common sense people. Let us keep our guns. After all, they respond faster than 911.

william merrick III - April 9, 2016

It is interesting that commercial companies are now displaying signs that no guns are allowed. My thought is, what will happen to that company when an actual shooter enters the property. I believe this opens the company to a large law suite. The old saying is true. “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”

Cynthia Aaron - April 9, 2016

The old saying goes something like this: If you take guns away from responsible people only criminals will have them. Just ask Brussels and France. They are having to teach their police people how to use them because most of their police don’t carry.

Virginia Thomas - April 9, 2016

Gun control is dangerously naive. If guns are banned, then only the criminals and the government will have guns. Private citizens will be utterly helpless to protect and defend themselves. Responsible gun owners are an asset to their families and to this country.

Rick Barr - April 9, 2016

Study after study has shone that law abiding citizens who are well armed equal lower violent crime rates.

Citizens are armed, subjects are not.
Survivors are armed, victims are not.

Phillip Davis - April 9, 2016

The Marxists will not come off this complete lie that gun control or the taking of firearms from legal owners saves lives. Anyone with a brain knows criminals get guns illegally. Numbers don’t lie when gun sales go up…crime drops. The Marxists foolishly think that if they lie about it long enough people will start believing the lie. Even the Marxists know they are wrong about it (taking ones firearms). Their dream is take all the guns from legal owners opening the doorway to an eventual tyrannical government (their dream). The Founders placed the 2nd Amendment in place to stop another Tyrannical government from coming to fruition This is one Amendment that will never be erased or changed no matter what trick or how hard they continue to try.

Michael Tysor - April 9, 2016

I will never give up my guns and I will fight anyone who tries to take them. The second ammendment is high up in placement in its position in the constution for a reason the founders well knew. It protects all other rights from the greatest threat to any right – government.
I sometimes wonder which fight will come next…the rhetorical legislative, literal or physical or emotional, mental and financial. So far, no one has come to my home to collect my firearms but I know they want to in many quarters of this country. Then, I suppose, my resolve will be tested.

G Roger Gathers - April 9, 2016

Gun control only controls the guns of the people who want to defend themselves. Guns are not the problem. Criminals will always have them anyway.

kimberly cook - April 9, 2016

Absolutely NOT !!

Jack Leishear - April 9, 2016

Of course not! If autos were banned would we have less people killed by them? What about knives?

lynne - April 9, 2016

Absolutely not. Guns are our right!

Theresa Caruso - April 9, 2016

Chicago, New York City and cities with strong gun control laws have the highest homicide rates, therefore, gun control is not the answer.

Shirley Kindt - April 9, 2016

Not at all

steve porter - April 9, 2016

no

David C Thurgood - April 9, 2016

If we outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns!

James Flood - April 9, 2016

I believe that a well armed and trained public will reduce the number of shootings and make America safe. The numbers already show that trend is working.

William Carter Jr - April 9, 2016

enforcing existing laws will dramatically lower the over all crime rate. doing what is right without having the bad guy sue you later when they are clearly the wrong-doer should be paramount in the court system

Retta - April 9, 2016

Absolutely not!

John Algeo - April 9, 2016

Gun control is not the solution to reducing homicides in America. I believe that it would be very difficult to achieve a high level of compliance with laws banning the private ownership of firearms, and criminals certainly would be loath to give up their weapons.

I spent the first third of my life in a community (admittedly small) in which shootings of people were unheard of. Hunting was common and a large portion of the population owned (and some carried) firearms.

It would probably be difficult to convince gun owners to turn in their guns (especially those who may plan to misuse them).

Anne McDade Barrett - April 9, 2016

My own background tells me that children raised with two parents and taught self-discipline and good morals early-on will curb many of the homicide problems. Of equal importance, we need a mental health system that will keep mentally ill people off the street.

Ronald - April 9, 2016

The Founding Fathers had it right with the Second Amendment. The removal of this right has been tragic
for the people throughout history, The latest is Australia.

Marilyn DeWitt - April 9, 2016

If only the bad guys have guns and the police can’t be everywhere all the time then we “everyday people” will die and when we die our country will die!

Gary - April 10, 2016

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Et.Veritatis.Ratio - April 10, 2016

Any intellectually honest analysis on how well gun control works demonstrates it is a failure. The problem is getting the truth out to the public. You have to fight through a biased media, the entire entertainment industry and most all of academia, all of whom seem to care nothing for the facts but instead they operate on blind fear of guns and mistrust of those who use them.

Carol Powell - April 10, 2016

I am retired and each day I wake up I realize that our country is changing, but not for the good. My Dad was a staunch Dem and now he would absolutely turn over in his grave if he say what the party is doing in the present. I have decided that I don’t want any part of what they are doing. I have decided to declare myself an Independent. I firmly believe that Ted Cruz is the person to lead this country back to the Constitution and GOD. Thanks

Pat Fry - April 10, 2016

NO!

velma steele - April 10, 2016

Gun control is not the solution to curbing crime in America instead, treating the mentally ill who commit acts of gun violence should get treatment and have no access to guns. Gun control will not decrease crime but increase it we should stop the criminals from committing crime not the guns. Criminalizing gun ownership is the lefts ideology of taking gun owners 2nd Amendment rights away who have their guns for leisure and protection. To stop the gun violence we need more armed cops in schools and public places is the real solution to ending gun violence in America.

Don - April 10, 2016

No, gun control will NOT reduce homicides, and Chicago is the laboratory that proves that point. Gun control advocates have another, far more insidious agenda, which is to make the citizenry powerless in the face of tyrannical oppression by government.

Sharilee - April 10, 2016

Gun control does not stop people from using guns against others. Gun control is to stop legal, responsible adults from possessing guns which the Constitution gives us the right to do. The stats prove this is true: ownership and responsible use of guns provides protection for individuals and is a deterrent to invasion by foreign countries and foreign and local persons’ violent attacks against all of us.

Charles Tartt - April 10, 2016

I do not think gun control will reduce crime
and I don’t think the 2nd amendment of
the constitution should be changed.

Patrick j. Gilhooly - April 10, 2016

I absolutely do not think gun control will have any effect on reducing violence in America. Most criminals with violent tendencies are not buying legal guns through background checks, which the left apparently can’t believe, By threatening the second amendment, One would only be separating the law-abiding from their legal ability to defend their own life, and the lives of others, which should be a crime in and of itself..I believe the issues is more about “control” than “guns”..

Anthony Shore - April 10, 2016

In a word NO!!!!!!!!

MargaretAnna Myers - April 10, 2016

Criminals or those like-minded will always find a way to get guns. Taking guns from the rest of the people puts us at risk of being targeted by the criminals. Actually a no-gun policy would invite criminal activity to increase.

Ronald jones - April 10, 2016

Gun control is not the answer. I own 3 guns and those guns have never killed anyone. The people that pick-up those guns and pull the trigger kill people.

Arthur A Williams - April 10, 2016

Gun control is the wrong way.cocealed carry for responsible persons would eliminate most crimes, because the criminal wouldn’t know if others were careering a weapon. Also, if all shop owners and cashiers were armed and the criminal is disabled, they would think twice befor commiting a crime.

Kurt Acord - April 10, 2016

I’m in favor of keeping the 2nd Amendment. I would also love to hear the liberals plan for taking the guns from the various gangs that exist in the USA.

Jack Troyer - April 10, 2016

There is too much gun control now. we need to have less gun free zones now.

William Dufendach - April 10, 2016

Of course not. Anyone who can reason logically would agree.

Vieva Johnson - April 10, 2016

Gun owners in Australia were forced
by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results were: homicides up 3.2 percent Australia wide, assaults up 8.6 percent Australia-wide, armed robberies up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms were up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed
robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in a 12 month’s period, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the
ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety
has decreased, after such monumental effort and money was expended in
successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience
and the other historical facts prove it. You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians
disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes,
gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of
gun control in Chicago, currently, and the record homicides they will have in 2016!
With Guns………….We Are ‘Citizens’.
Without Them……..We Are ‘Subjects’..

William S. - April 10, 2016

Absolutely Not ! What reduces Homicides is Guns in the Hands of the Potential Victims ! That The Deterrent !!!

Stella Milam - April 11, 2016

Research shows clearly that gun control is not the answer to our problems. We must have guns to protect ourselves. We always had guns in our home, our 5 children learned to shoot and to hunt. This is a hobby they still enjoy all these many years later.

Karla Rose - April 11, 2016

If they take guns away from honest, law-abiding citizens then only the crooks and the government will have guns. Statistics show that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens accounts for and incredibly small number of deaths. We need to stand behind our constitutional right to bear arms for personal defense.

Bill & Betty Whitehead - April 11, 2016

We believe the Bill of Rights is without a doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest, documents ever penned in the history of mankind to establish human freedoms and liberty. Coupled to the Constitution together they form humankind’s foundation for liberty. One of any humans’ essential rights is for self-preservation: from predators and rouge government. A perusal of history will show the facts, and they are stubborn things (John Adams) for our Liberal friends who try to ignore them, that whenever and wherever weapons were removed from law abiding citizens totalitarianism, death and genocide proceeded to kill or subjugate millions. A perfect, recent case in point is the one listed by Vieva Johnson concerning Australia’s ban on civilian firearms. Guess what!? The crooks didn’t turn theirs in, big shock! We need to defend, even with our lives, our right to self-preservation and protection because the government cannot do it on that level. Remember: when your life is in jeopardy and seconds count the police are only minutes away!
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government”

— Thomas Jefferson

Peggy Christensen - April 11, 2016

Absolutely NOT!! Our history has proven that guns are not the problem and freedom-loving Americans, now more than any other time in our country’s history, need our guns to protect us from the intrusions of what has become a dictatorship of the very far left.

Rex Cowart - April 11, 2016

A simple NO will suffice!

Bill Reich - April 11, 2016

Canada has widespread firearms ownership. They have very little gun crime. I think it’s because they are nicer than we are.
Fewer of them want to kill anyone and fewer of them need killing.

John Vaughan - April 11, 2016

Weapons do not cause death. The people that use them are the cause. To restrict weaponry is a futility. Education in the moral relations of our citizenship can change the cause of violent death. .

John Vaughan - April 11, 2016

Show me a population without weapons and I will see a population of slaves to their rulers and their criminals.

John R - April 11, 2016

I believe in the Second Amendment and a private citizens right to own and perhaps carry a gun. Having recently gone to a 4 day defensive pistol training, where training is to avoid a fight but when in a circumstances, know how to win. Yet you then have to defend yourself in court for having protected yourself. How is that?

Rayford Kimble - April 11, 2016

No, it is not. The most important role of the second amendment is to protect citizens from Government. The best Government is the Government that governs least.

Karen Bartlett - April 12, 2016

Not at all. Gun control is an attempt to take guns from the law-abiding. Therefore it could have nothing to do with reducing crime. The motive of the government isn’t to reduce crime, otherwise they would enforce the laws already on the books concerning guns. Their intent is to take guns from the hands of everyday, responsible Americans. Now why they would want to do that is a matter of speculation, since the federal government certainly won’t admit they are targeting the law-abiding. They insist their purpose is to control crime, which sounds like double-speak to me (a la George Orwell’s “1984”).

T.J. Verkerke - April 12, 2016

They all seem to forget that when the constitution was written, there was no standing army or police force like we see today. That was the task of the Militia which was basically every man, and some women, in town who had a gun. And most people had guns in those days. Its how you put food on the table, not Ralphs or Lucky markets. Self defense was just a nice side benefit, and it helped get rid of them pesky redcoats..

Henry C. Holder - April 12, 2016

No, the bad guys will alwasy have guns and a public without guns is very vulnerable.

Alice Cromley - April 12, 2016

I completely agree with what Jan Toles had to say. Doris Bernhardt also said it very well.

As to the liberals taking away our freedoms, they certainly have done a stellar job of it. We as conservatives have no say about our religious beliefs!

Lee G. Courtney - April 12, 2016

There are three quotes that conservatives should embrace as maxims.
The first quote is; “Those who stand for nothing will eventually fall for anything” author unknown.
The second is, and we were taught as children; “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me.”
Author unknown
The third quote is, I believe, by Thomas Jefferson; “An armed man is a citizen, an unarmed man is a subject.”
With these we arm ourselves against the attacks from the left!
The left is not concerned with the truth, but will lie to achieve it’s ideology.
.

Kathleen Rush - April 12, 2016

No. If every household had at least one gun and everyone old enough knew how to use a gun the “bad” guy would think twice before entering. I also like the fact more people have permits to carry.

Dave Hardy - April 12, 2016

The opposite is mostly likely to continue, it is the mental state of the individual that determines the use of a gun or any weapon for that matter. Thank our founding fathers for their perspective and reasoning.

Bobby Anderson - April 13, 2016

Natural law is in existence for a reason. It regulates the natural process of the universe. Anything less would be chaotic and that is exactly what the founders of the U. S. Constitution understood. They established the document with a Bill of Rights that protected the sovereign individual from the tyranny of government and powerful people of a society. The 2nd amendment means exactly what it states and for explicit reasons. If the people have guns those stated forces cannot overrule them, case closed. This has nothing to do with the criminal element, its all about power and who control it.

Lavonne Hunt - April 13, 2016

NO! NO! NO!
Taking guns out of the hands of law abiding gun owners only insures that the criminals will be able to do crimes with little to stop them. The police generally get to the crime scene after the fact, if they’re not ambushed on the way. Criminals by nature don’t follow laws. They’ll get guns no matter what laws are on the books. Disarming law abiding citizens is one of the first steps toward tyranny. That’s why our Founders put the Second Ammendment in the Constitution!

Art - April 13, 2016

No I most certainly do not! It’s the “consolidation” of firearms in the hands of gangs, street thugs, and yes the few “nut cases” who go off and decide to kill someone who are largely to blame for gun homicides. Look at Chicago! Some of the toughest gun laws and yet one of the highest murder rates in the country! And there are others also! It’s not the guns (well, maybe we could do with a few less 50 caliber assault guns in our society etc.) it’s those with the criminal mindset that commit the crimes! Not John Q Citizen!

Bill Coates - April 13, 2016

Self control has been driven out of our schools and out of our ‘entertainment’. Character development is essential, but most of our role models have none. Guns can at least keep a few decent people alive.

Verva Thomas - April 13, 2016

Hell NO!!!
Send ALL the ANTI Americans back to where they came from. If they were born here any anti American country will do. They can see if they like it any better there

Dennis Thompson - April 13, 2016

When Hillary said on TV that no one in this country has a right to a gun for self defense, I wonder how many people realize she is surrounded by armed guards. Hypocrite.

Paula Pettit Skender - April 14, 2016

Solidly believe that the “….only thing that gun control ensures is that criminals will have all the guns, and law abiding citizens can be controlled by their government….” goes right along with the old slogan, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” AND GUESS WHAT — THEN THIS PERSON WILL BE AN OUTLAW.

Howard Burger - April 14, 2016

No.

Bruce Mehew - April 15, 2016

No, it never has been nor will ever be! Liberals only use “mass shootings” to further their agenda, which is totally disarming America. If they can make guns illegal, then you can be arrested for owning a gun. The Second Amendment has as little to do with protecting yourself as it does with protecting yourself AGAINST the Federal Government. We should have access to as many arms as the government. That’s what keeps them fearful of the people.

M L Johnson - April 16, 2016

Everyone should have a gun. Unless they are convicted of a capitol offense.

Dean E. Bryan - April 17, 2016

I wish to address all three issues presented. The real issue is not guns, principles, or socialism. It is, however, the heart and integrity of the American people. The concept of American idealism, of individuality, and independence has been gutted from thinking by a public educational system that is anti America. It is still true that “as the twig is bent so grows the tree.
Unless we can mend the liberal educational system there is little hope of salvaging the minds of upcoming Americans.

daniel - April 17, 2016

no .when discussing policy about gun violence laws that are in place need to be enforced and redundant laws and laws that are directed against the law abiding peoples repealed

Lee Shepard - April 18, 2016

What good would gun control be only the criminals would have guns.

Mary Tucker - April 25, 2016

NO!

Diane Woodard - May 21, 2016

Your Heritage graphic is sufficient evidence to answer your question. We don’t need gun control; we need morality control!
