Last week in Chicago, experts from Heritage’s Center for Legal and Judicial Studies argued that American society has become overcriminalized. Many Americans, they explained, violate federal laws every day without even knowing it, and this poses a growing threat to our liberties.
Panelists included Ed Meese, Heritage’s Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy and former U.S. Attorney General, and Brian Walsh and Paul Rosenzweig. Walsh and Rosenzweig recently authored One Nation Under Arrest, which explains how our nation’s laws create traps for the innocent but unwary and threaten to make criminals out of those who are doing their best to be respectable, law-abiding citizens.
