On Tuesday, after rumors of talk show host Oprah Winfrey running for president in 2020, newly-elected Heritage president Kay Coles James took to Twitter to invite Winfrey to debate.

James is never one to shy away from a good debate and Heritage is always open for sharing the conservative perspective on today’s issues.

It remains to be seen whether Winfrey will accept the challenge to debate or not.

If Winfrey came to Heritage, what issues would you want to be discussed?

Ronald Costales - January 12, 2018

The importance of term limits.

Mary Honecker - January 12, 2018

foreign policy

tax reform

socialized medicine

how she views the constitution of the USA

Natalia Kandror - January 12, 2018

It is a big question if Oprah will run or not but invitation is a good thing anyway.
Policy discussion do not have to be between candidates, people of all walks of life could participate.
I am not sure that you have to debate, open dialog seems more appropriate.

Gerald Adamson - January 12, 2018

The same issues president Trump is trying to get our rhino’s to do.

Timothy R Eby - January 12, 2018

I doubt that she will be willing to have a logical, reasoned discussion. Here are my suggestions should she accept:

The Constitution and the rule of law
Immigration and the rule of law
Fiscal policy and the rule of law
Foreign policy and the rule of law
Separation of powers via the Constitution
Separation of church and state

William Coates - January 12, 2018

Can she judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin?
What does she base character judgment on?
I’m afraid this prospect puts me in the same boat as the European journalist who wrote in 2011 that the world can survive an Obama presidency, but can it survive an America that elects him?

Al Darold - January 12, 2018

I would focus on three issues –
1 – how do you view the US Constitution? Are you an originalist or do you see it as adaptable to current needs?
2 – what are your views on capitalism? Do you feel it is best to rely on free markets or use the government to direct the economy?
3 – Do you favor limited government or would you rely on government to address most problems?

Carl Linge - January 12, 2018

Winfrey should not be encouraged in any way to run for office. Heritage should not give credibility to such a person who has espoused opinions inimical to the conservative cause.

Rick Mendes - January 12, 2018

I have always thought Winfrey was more moderate than most progressives. If she visits Heritage, ask her for her ideas on bringing moderate republicans and democrats together in a bi-partisan way.

I think the only way we are ever going to get the far left and far right to be more reasonable is to build a large bi-partisan group at the center of the political spectrum.

Grace Pierce - January 12, 2018

What would Winfrey do about the following:
North Korea threats
Iran violating agreement
China currency manipulation
Russian aggression
FISA controversy
The failure of socialized medicine in Canada
Immigration Amnesty

Julia Webster - January 12, 2018

How would she change the welfare system to encourage people to get off it –or would she leave it as is?

Mary Gentry - January 12, 2018

> How would she handle the North Korean mess?
> Her views on illegal and legal immigration?
> Would she put America first?
> Would she bring sanctuary cities/states to heel?
> Does she think the Constitution is a living document, or should it be interpreted by the courts as written?
> Would she go back to the “leading from behind” policies of Obama?
> What does she think of the United States of America?
> What does she think the immigration policy of the US should be?
> Does she think the US should be more conciliatory with foreign powers (Obama), or should the US project strong leadership (Trump)?
> Would she be racially devisive (as some of her comments suggest), or would she try to heal the racial divisions in the country?
> Do you think a limited federal government is the best way to make America prosper?

SHARON L IMEL - January 12, 2018

1.Safety from foreign countries
2. Fair immigration for all not just, Mexicans, who use and abuse our country at hard working Americans expense.
3. Respect for the American Indians, who nurtured America long before we came.
4. Our right to protect ourselves is our right to be free. How do you feel about this and the threat of a foreign entity.
5. What is the difference from you and the the previous Democratic runner, Clinton?
The previous Democratic parties almost ruined this country into hopeless despair until President trump came along. He has in his own and individual way made America stronger, safer, and inspired our economy to where the American people have hope again. Would you be able to do this as well, or would you follow the previous Democratic record. and solicit poverty to gain strength, building government oppression and building populous reliance on the Government?
6. Earth and strong economy/ can we live together? Work/jobs/protection/care for Animals?
7.How do you feel about how the food processing industry and how the animals are so mistreated in the slaughter house?
8.How do you feel about the nuisance the homeless people create on the streets, causing so much damage, filth, and mess? Do you think the hard working people should have to live with these people ruining the streets,
our buildings, and our properties?
9. Why are you running in the Democratic political arena? This is the Arena where the Government is taking more and more control of the people and causing poverty and decline. Why not run for a republican ticket, and see what you can do to increase the strength of the country?

Don Bascom - January 12, 2018

You are a great example of how a hard working person can become a success in the USA. As president, how would you encourage responsibility vs entitlement, while still providing help to the truly needy?

Jeanette Burrage - January 12, 2018

I hope you can discuss the economy and the laws of supply and demand. Perhaps she would be willing to gather information on the subject.

Philip C Heitz - January 12, 2018

If Oprah becomes President I wish to see her stress the need to use Logic, not Emotion, to create solutions to America’s Problems.
In addition I want her to be aware of the need to maintain Constitutional balance in Government, keeping the branches separate but equal. Pay careful attention to the 10th Amendment, and make note of the fact that the Constitution begins with a directive that states the Federal Government must promote the General, not Individual, Welfare of the Nation. that requires Infrastructure maintenance and development. Individual welfare should be the responsibility of the States.

Beverly Jean - January 12, 2018

Why are you running?
Securing our borders
Putting a stop to “identity” politics
Do you support the free market?
Do you support our Constitution?
Maintaining Social Security
Do you believe in sanctuary states and cities…if you do, why?

Tom Lanners - January 12, 2018

Ask her one question, where do our rights come from. Then do not talk. Listen to her answer if you can get one out of all the verbiage she will surely put forth. If she answers, and answers correctly, then you can discuss with her what Heritage stands for, and go from there. If she doesn’t answer, or answers incorrectly, you don’t really have anything to discuss do you?

Leon Dillman - January 12, 2018

Reading all the comments made me wonder if I am the only one concerned with the abortion issue. Has Oprah ever spoken on the issue. I am not a follower of hers, so I don’t know what her position is. If she runs as a Democrat, she has to be pro-abortion or she would be ousted from the party, but I would like to know if she is as radical as Clinton and Pelosi are.

Renee Szabo - January 13, 2018

The right to abortion

Ken Hodge - January 13, 2018

Enforcing immigration laws.
Protecting our borders.
Simplification of the tax code.
The benefits of free-market health care.
I’m glad Kay will engage her.

George Gomez - January 13, 2018

Politicians have created a process of exempting themselves from the very laws they pass. If anyone has created an image of being better than the community they serve it is them. Will Oprah entertain the idea of having them live by the same medical programs as the rest of us.

Dennis Johnson - January 13, 2018

I would want these questions asked of Oprah or any candidate for political office.
What is her stand on the meaning of the constitution and the rule of law.
What is her stand on legal and illegal immigration.
Where does she stand on gun control.
Where does she stand on national security.
How would she unite a country that has grown so divided by politicians in the last 10 years.
How is she going to protect the American citizen against the corruption of big government and its non elected bureaucrats in government agency’s like the IRS, DOJ, EPA, Homeland Security.
Where does she stand on waste in government spending of tax dollars on useless and non essential programs and the out of control national debt.

Michael Ray - January 13, 2018

Oprah has done extremely well as a capitalist. How will she use that talent to reduce the number of people on welfare programs and create jobs.

Robert Leach - January 13, 2018

I hope you can ask her why liberals in Congress and the media, ultimately call all of us with conservative ideas, racist. It has polarized America and led to hatred on both sides.

Susan Rose - January 13, 2018

I would ask Winfrey this: Why are you a liberal Democrat when Capitalism has proven so great to you? You have shown how making money has made you able to be extremely generous. All the generosity you have shown has come back to you tenfold. It seems to me you are really a Republican at heart!

Jack Culley - January 13, 2018

Has she the understanding that adherence to the US Constitution is the
solution to most problems that face the
nation?

John Wiener - January 13, 2018

The misconception that police are targeting AfroAmericans.

James Anderson - January 13, 2018

What is her stand on abortion, partial birth abortion and late term abortion.

Thomas Guarino - January 13, 2018

What her views of America are and where she would expect the country to progress within constitutional boundaries and what our way of life was, is and will be.

D. B. Cobb - January 13, 2018

Protection for churches and vendors who do not wish to provide services for gay marriages.

Mrs. Phyllis Eix - January 13, 2018

We’d like to know how she feels about the 1st and 2nd amendments. Is she pro-life, pro traditional marriage, pro religious freedom, pro enforcement of laws on the books, pro right-to-work laws, pro gun rights. Is she pro securing our borders and pro opening our voting booths to citizens only. A short list, but a start.

Alva Hill - January 13, 2018

A balanced budget.
Immigration that meets the needs of the needs of the United States.

Robert Petersen - January 13, 2018

What can be done in the inner cities to reduce drugs, crime, and lack of marriage.
Why have the Democrats made things worse and yet they are continually reelected despite no results. Removing the marriage penalty from welfare might help. Otherwise all the issues Mr. Trump is doing so well why do Dems object

Bonnie Sargeant - January 13, 2018

What could she do to encourage the Democrats and Republicans to stop fighting each other for the primary reason of power and control for themselves.

Phil Campisi - January 13, 2018

What Liberals like Oprah need to understand is the difference between compassion & codependency. In short, who are the real racists? It is the Liberals that are creating a dependent group from our Afro American population. They have created a way of life for them that is destructive to themselves & others. Please talk truth about racism. Who really cares about them as persons?

Patty Wible - January 13, 2018

First, I would ask Ms. Winfrey how well she knows the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the political leanings of all foreign countries with which she would come in contact.

matthew groff - January 13, 2018

-CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS.
-MEDIA TO PROVIDE TRUE FACTS, NOT
DISTORTED OR PERSONAL WANTS.
-CONGRESS WORKING TOGETHER FOR
THE PEOPLE NOT FOR THEMSELVES.
-ANNUAL BUDGET AND CONFORMING TO THE BUDGET.

frank bergwall - January 13, 2018

will candidate and president Winfrey support the First Amendment of the Constitution as written and as intended by the founders?

Joe - January 13, 2018

Immigration reform! Why do we bring in so many government dependent immigrants when our cities are already chock full of poverty stricken, hungry, under educated, unskilled people.

MANUEL S. STA ROMANA Jr - January 13, 2018

1.What is her stand on abortion?
2. What is her stand on Gay Marriage
3. Does she believe that Jesus Christ is Lord
4. Does she believe that the Bible is the Holy word of God
5. What is her stand on building the border wall
6. Foreign Policy on law of the sea
against China aggressive military behavior against the Philippines and surrounding Asian nations. Stand on N.Korea nuclear weapons and Iran nuclear supplies and supporting terrorism
7. climate change
8. Immirgration
9. Should taxes be raise or not for the middle income earner
10. What is her stand on Fake News
11. Stand on Obama Healthcare
12. Does she support Israel military defense against Arab nations and Iran

Christine Salter - January 13, 2018

I’d like you to discuss the Convention of States will Oprah.

Ray Nixon - January 13, 2018

The National Debt
National Security
Political Polarization

carole boddicker - January 13, 2018

We must fund and build the wall!!

Nancy Chubbs - January 13, 2018

I am really confused what it is about women that need so much attention. If a woman is secure in her religion, her person and family why does she need government attention?

J. Michael Clark Sr. (Mike) - January 13, 2018

Oprah will not run. I don’t watch Oprah. All I know is second hand. I’ve never heard that she has any interest in these Presidential responsibilities.

Stan Beachy - January 13, 2018

I would like to see you challenge her, even if she doesn’t run, to use her position of influence to strengthen African-American family structure in the US, specifically by challenging fathers to take responsibility for the care and nurture of the children they bring into the world.

Charles S. Mancuso - January 13, 2018

Opra’s understanding of the US Constitution is paramount, especially the first ten amendments!

Robert Ewald - January 13, 2018

Immigration is probably my 1 issue. The second is how Democrats diminish blacks through outrageous welfare programs.

Timothy R. Buttner - January 13, 2018

Aside from the “women’s issue”, which I believe to be a phony issue, what policies and programs of Mr. Obama would you like to see further promulgated?

Pat Ellis - January 13, 2018

How can American citizens get our country to unite and support our president? How can we get citizens and organizations to stop bashing our president?

Doris Parker - January 13, 2018

how late in a pregnancy is it ok to kill a baby
North Korea
Iran Nuclear deal
Immigration
Her opinion on the Russian collusion mess

Richard Beightol - January 13, 2018

I think one item that Oprah Winfrey would have an edge if running for President is that she stands a good winning chance to bring our Country to unify, draw our entire Country to band together. Perhaps better than anyone I can think of!!

Toney - January 13, 2018

What has her party done to help the poor short of just handing over tax payers money and what would she do.

Randy - January 13, 2018

Academic question. NO WAY Oprah will visit Heritage.

James Reid Hahn - January 13, 2018

Questions:
1-will she answer facts or divert from them?
2-will she focus on facts or personalities?
3-will she protect US citizens ahead of illegal immigrants?
4-based on facts, what is her position on the wall & why?
5-what’s her position on 2nd amendment & what peer reviewed facts support her?
6-what’s her position on sanctuary cities following the law? Does she support the law?

Mark Tomasevich - January 13, 2018

I think the invitation is a brilliant move, a win win. If she declines, advertise the heck out of that and that’s a win. If she accepts, pick any of the suggestions I’ve read in the comments and just get her to answer with some substance.

One question would be her views on the size and reach of government.

Floyd Keinath - January 13, 2018

+6
Is she a “Tax & Spend” person ? What will she do about the bloated Welfare system. What will she do about all the Illegal immigrants that have broken the law ?

Robert Gingrich - January 13, 2018

Before you ask her anything, you need to put her under oath to honestly answer any questions you put to her. I think she is one of the biggest phonies to ever come down the pike.

Michael Brown - January 13, 2018

What are your thoughts on our national security? What are you ideas on the subject?

Bonnie Winslow - January 13, 2018

Foreign policy as to North Korea, China, Israel, Isis, Russia, and all of the middle east.
Decrease in discretionary spending unless and until the budget is permanently balanced.
Constitutional law and the purpose of the Supreme Court (interpretation vs legislation from the bench).
Immigration policy and law enforcement.

Diane Stevens - January 13, 2018

The amount of $$ spent on & for illegals in America. Why do Amercans have to pay for the children of illegals- these children ARE NOT DREAMERS- the children of LEGAL Americans are the real DREAMERS. Illegals put their children at risk – we did not do that but we are being told to support ILLEGALS’ kids & not oir own!!! Why is this?

Jim Collins - January 13, 2018

I recommend having discussion on how programs intended to lift people up to be self sufficient can be consolidated and improved to be more effective and efficient vs. simply expanded and made more expensive.

Also, I recommend discussing the need for, and benefits of a merit-based immigration system, supported by border security and enforcement of the law.

Thanks for asking!

Marilyn S Mackey - January 13, 2018

She seems to be someone who is very interested in social issues. I’d like to have here respond to how she would deal with the entitlement debt that we’re drowning in.

Patricia Cox - January 13, 2018

How would she deal with the hypocrisy of the democrats?
How would she approach getting people off welfare?
Which of Obama’s policies did she dislike the most?
Which parties policies does she think helped her reach success and why?

Joseph Burke - January 13, 2018

What is Oprah’s view and stand on abortion. With the Democrat stand of complete, 9-month approval, would she support that?

Karen Christensen - January 13, 2018

Does she believe the Constitution of the United States is real and true (as it was originally written?)
marriage only between a man and a woman
does she believe in our 2nd amendment rights?
foreign policy – being friends to all, but not making alliances with our enemies.
tax reform
free market healthcare

Ted Doiron - January 13, 2018

1- Discuss why all the HYPE about DACA and why not discuss the real issue: the law of Immigration. 2- How can we keep out Jihadists from entering our country and how do we expel those already here. 3- Our schools are not competing with the rest of the world. Where is the problem? Discuss the issues without the hype and do not let her get away with holding America hostage to the emotions of the liberal strategy. Ted

John A. Quayle - January 13, 2018

The progressive movement has been such an utter disaster for minorities – particularly black folks. Yet, they seem to be welded to the Democrat party with its far leftist ideals. Why?

Eleanor P - January 14, 2018

I would ask Oprah how she plans to manage the economy, how she plans to budget the armed forces, education and healthcare, how will she handle North Korea, Iran, China and Russia.

Suzanne Russell - January 14, 2018

I would want to know if she would be a President for the whole country, not just once group. We have many groups in our country and it takes a lot of love to support them all. Can she do that?

Susan Dobzynial - January 14, 2018

The effect of healthcare policy on the medical profession. Policy that will release it from the regulatory morass and bureaucratic schemes and allow it to thrive, policy that will allow physicians to engage in commerce equal to the rest of Americans.

Are you for improving the economic position of the lower class by training and job growth or entitlements?

Fortney - January 14, 2018

I wouldn’t give her the time of day till she is a serious candidate. Now, only gives her notoriety politically.
Second, somebody needs get to Trump with his childish, immature and cutter ghetto actions. If not, it just gives the Jackasses more ammunition and Trump will be a one term President. Not even Rebublicans like his rhetoric

Darla McNeese - January 14, 2018

What is her plan for education.

Please do not have the debate if the questions and answers sought are going to just skim the surface.

Carol Brumwell - January 16, 2018

What about the Democrat Party core philosophy especially reflects your values? So much of what you say about personal responsibility matches GOP principles that we seem better aligned.
For example, you’re quoted as writing in 2007 “We all are responsible for ourselves, that you create your own reality by the way you think and therefore act. You cannot blame apartheid, your parents, your circumstances, because you are not your circumstances. You are your possibilities.”

Nancy McKnight - January 17, 2018
