2009: A Year of Achievement for The Heritage Foundation and the Conservative Movement
One year ago, Americans had just elected Barack Obama as president, and he promised to enact the most progressive agenda in U.S. history. The mainstream media had declared conservative ideas outdated and the conservative movement dead.
Since then, the Left has directly attacked our nation's founding principles. Capitalizing on the economic crisis, lawmakers passed a trillion-dollar giveaway of taxpayer dollars that failed to stimulate the economy or save jobs. And they've proposed a costly takeover of the health care system and a cap-and-tax program to fight global warming.
Conservatives who believe in the principles of freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society were faced with a choice. We could retreat or we could regroup and stand our ground.
At The Heritage Foundation, we chose to stand our ground.
In 2009, our experts led the charge against socialized medicine, made the case against handouts to big labor, stood up to the Left's cap-and-tax global warming plan, and more.
And today, conservatives are mounting a comeback, and Heritage, the single-most influential public policy think-tank in Washington, D.C., is taking the lead.
We don't toe the line for political parties or candidates. Instead, we research, develop, and distribute intellectually honest, principled, conservative policy solutions to the issues facing America at this critical time.
