Last night on John Stossel’s Fox Business program, five public policy organizations including The Heritage Foundation competed in the “Battle of the Budgets” to determine the best plan to restore America’s finances.

Stossel awarded Heritage’s Saving the American Dream plan the prize for best budget.

During one segment, Heritage’s Stuart Butler went head to head with the American Enterprise Institute’s Andrew Biggs to compare and contrast their plans.

During Butler’s explanation of Saving the American Dream, Stossel interrupted Butler to make clear that Heritage’s plan “cuts more than every other plan.”

“And I should be clear,” Stossel said, “you balance the budget eventually. None of the other plans do.”

Butler and the Heritage plan was awarded the “Emmy” for best budget plan.

Read more about Heritage’s Saving the American Dream plan.

Tell us in the comments: Do you think Heritage can save the American Dream?

Do I think Heritage can save the American Dream? No, but the plan is good. The Heritage Foundation is not sitting in Congress. Those gutless wonders will be sent home in the next election.

John Latham - May 27, 2011

Yes. Thanks Heritage for looking out for America. Now only if our politicians have the nerve to do the right thing and not worry about just getting re-elected!

LEON BRIGGS - May 27, 2011

HERITAGE HAS IT ABSOLUTLY CORRECT.

Johnnie Dickerson - May 27, 2011

I think so, It’s all about how you plan things to me. Most importantly, the way the plan is instituted… With tact and professionally.

Mr. Dickerson

Don Perry - May 27, 2011

You guy’s are great.. but there just not enough people in the right places that care about the “COUNTRY”.. We need more Ryan’s, more Demint’s.. Good God help us..

J.M. Cartwright - May 27, 2011

I don”t think anyone is doing what is needed to get federal finances corrected. I see only the misrepresentations of what is in the remedial proposals. No leadership in Congress to browbeat or shame the do nothings into doing what they have promised and directed to do by our nation. Media will sit up and take notice of a little more waspish attack on the left and the B.S. they continually spew. Remember the publicity Joe from the Carolinas got when he called Obama a liar? We (the nation) need some people on our side to tell the story. Those who continually ask for more money to do what they have said they were doing all along but haven’t need to show more action and less begging – if they have influence, let’s see them use it and get results for a change.

John Uhrhammer - May 27, 2011

I feel that Heritage is starting out with a great handicap; it is being successfully distracted by the current administration! The president is not “incompetent”, he is deliberately causing the country to go socialist. He won’t enforce our immigration laws: he won’t stop let us develop our oil resources: he won’t let congress act but uses “czars” to subvert the intent of 3 branches of government: he won’t stop spending us into oblivion!
The man has NO integrity!

Stephen C. Eldridge - May 27, 2011

It is good that spending will be cut dramatically.

However, certain elements are UNNECESSARY to its success and it fails to clearly enunciate Constitutional principles and thereby supports the Progresssives’ 100 year destruction of the Republic.

It is UNNECESSARY that the plan exacerbates wealth redistribution by additional means-testing which adds to the redistribution of wealth to those with “needs”, from those with wealth (i.e., those who have already subsidized the “poor” all of their working lives). The affirmation of un-constitutional “safety-nets” also adds to wealth redistribution.

Heritage must speak out clerarly against un-constitutional wqealth rediostribution via means-testing and safety nets instead of merely playing into the Progressive lullaby.

MARGARET ORTON - May 27, 2011

Yes I think you can. Now just sell this good idea to the everyday people in layman terms so we can understand how it would help our lives. I am a senior and it took me years to start understanding that any income level your at ther is ways to live within your means. Educating our children ,starting at the lowest age possible about money, how to handle it etc. is the only way to go.
Look at couples one of the quickest ways to get mad at each other is over money. This must be taught now .
We are at the cross road I pray we do not waste are chance. God Bless Maggie

Frank - May 27, 2011

Heritage seems to argue for a “Fair Tax” as a replacement for the Income Tax. That is an absolutely necessary requirement before we can ever hope to solve our financial problems! Why? Because it not only will prevent anyone rich from using “loopholes” to avoid taxes, but it will also force ALL Americans to pay some tax so as to have some “skin in the game”. No more, “Give me my free lunch & pay for it by taxing someone else” mentality. I also agree we should means test Medicare & give it only to those who really need it. But I would go further than that. I think we should phase out Medicare (& Social Security) from the Federal Government. I think they are Unconstitutional Federal oversteps. They should be phased out for people under 55 with full refunds plus interest, let people opt-in or opt-out of them (get refunds or stay in plan) if 55-65 & for those already retired on these plans, let them keep them as promised. The States can, if they want, have their own versions of these programs (if the voters insist on them). That would be OK & Constitutional. Voters could chose to live in high tax & high social benefit States or move to lower tax States with lower social benefits. Finally, ALL Federal programs (including Defense) should be on the table for cuts. Multiple Federal Departments can be eliminated (like the Dept. of Education which is also a Federal oversteps never intended by our Founding Fathers). And frankly, I don’t see the need for hundreds of thousands of troops around the world guarding places (like Europe & South Korea) where they can afford to guard themselves. I also don’t think we need hundreds of bases in over a hundred countries around the world. With the cost savings from bringing many troops home & base closures, we can modernize our forces & have at least a limited missile defense shield. Probably we can do all that for less money than we spend today.

With all these steps in place, we can balance our budget.

Nora McGrath - May 27, 2011

I always agree with and know that Mr Stossel and Heritage stand up for America and truth so yes there’s a good probability that Heritage can. thanks for all your hard work and all you do! God bless you.

Robert Mounts - May 27, 2011

First, we make the president honor the War Powers Act via a complete Lybian withdrawal. Has the defense dept ever been audited? I think we should audit the Fed and defense dept. If the defense is spending the money well, we leave their budget alone. If there is waste, we cut their budget.

Merrill Holbrook - May 27, 2011

I agree with most of what was presented. However, a means test for Medicare or SSI is risky. First if its called an insurance program then a means test is inappropriate. If its a welfare program a means test may be appropriate. Much of this depends upon the implementation rules. If the means test applies to only real income and not accumulated wealth I may agree. The issue here is if one accumulates wealth in an IRA or 401K which is taxable when drawen out is that going to be means tested? If so I would disagree with the approach.

Mark Christensen - May 27, 2011

This is why I trust Heritage for everything that has to do with Financal Stability of our Country.

Heritage should be the first person that all Presidents contact prior to making any Legislative changes. With the help of Heritage Foundation the American Dream will be alive for my Grandchildren.

Thank you Mark Christensen

James R. Schuf - May 27, 2011

The Heritage plan is the ONLY way to go initialy, and be refined as time goes on. Thanks Heritage!

JSchauf

Maureen Anderson - May 27, 2011

I agree with the Heritage plan about the wealthy not needing SS or Medicare. I also think that the tax payers should not have to pay for all the Senators and Congressional people’s health care, after they are out of office, for the rest of there lives. I don’t think our founding fathers had that written in any law. That is one big entitlement that can be done away with. Most of these people in government are wealthy anyway.

joecool - May 27, 2011

Yes. Heritage thrives on common sense solutions to problems with consistency. That application of common sense is the only thing which can save us.

Jan Heinricks - May 27, 2011

I am a subscriber to Heritage. You analyses are always thorough and well supported with facts. I believe that the Heritage plan to balance the budget is reasonable, common-sensed, and does more to eliminate waste and fraud in the Federal budget. It gets the Federal government out of areas that it doesn’t belong and moves us back to a Constitutional based Federal government. Keep up the good work fighting to preserve our freedoms, protect Capitalism, and recapture the opportunity for every American to achieve their dreams.

William Reuter - May 27, 2011

As a Heritage Foundation Supporter I am biased in favor of their plan simply because of the conservative values they preach day in and day out. They say it, I believe them, ’nuff said.

txjep2 - May 27, 2011

1. What were the five organizations, and how close is the Heritage Plan to the Ryan Plan? – which the cowardly republicans hide from as if they had never heard heard of it.

E.A. Fraser - May 27, 2011

The Heritage Foundation serves as a reliable information source in the midst of misinformation and deliberate mismanagement by so many of our career politicians. Without the steadfast collection and application of factual materials concerning the relevant questions of our times by Heritage Foundation efforts, our country would be ultimately doomed to become another replication of failed European notions of governance. This is truly the time for inspired application of common sense derived from research as opposed to talking points and manufactured propaganda designed to perpetuate political jobs. Heritage is a prime mover in this battle.

gailcrispin@yahoo.com - May 27, 2011

Heritage can only save the American dream only if all of the citizens rise up fight for all of our freedoms, regardless of the cost.

Paul Shreve - May 27, 2011

If not Us, then who? If not now, then When? If later, then at what cost?

It’s time to face reality that we have a spending problem and it needs to change! The time for Personal Responsibility is now and if later I’m afraid the Republic will not stand!

Donald Vastlik - May 27, 2011

In Mississippi we have a balanced budget, a rainy day fund, and low taxes. Three things the federal government can’t say. I wish people like Beckel would have accurate information befor puting their mouth in motion.

Larry - May 27, 2011

We need a balanced budget, we need to get spending under control. It is going to hurt to make changes now, it will hurt a lot more if we wait till the whole system fails or comes closer to failing. What makes our government think they can just keep spending and spend their way out of this?

Larry - May 27, 2011

What makes our government think they can just keep spending and spend their way out of this? The Hertiage plan sounds like the best most direct plan.

Dennis Wade - May 27, 2011

The Heritage plan is absolutely amazing, fundamentally sound and makes more sense that anything I have seen. Great Job and that is why I support The Heritage Foundation!

Rene Labadens - May 27, 2011

I enjoyed the the clip here on the debate between: AEI vs
Heritage! While Mr. Biggs(AEI) was plausible, in my
opinion, Mr. Butler’s was much better with the reaction I saw from the panel! Plus, since Mr. Butler actually experienced the European version, I like the fact that his ‘Budget Plan’ was fairer for ALL Americans!

Ray Johnson - May 27, 2011

Not if they continue to put out half truths like the first myth in ED Feulner’s letter of May 23, 2011.
I have paid into social security, and continue to pay in, for 70 years. It is not a subsidy to me.

Donald Worden - May 27, 2011

In view of the number of voters addicted to the concept of our current entitlement programs, or totally dependent on entitlements, what are the odds of motivating a sufficient number of politicians to actually create, submit and pass legislation such as you are proposing? Congress is adept at kicking the can down the road but completely out to lunch when it comes to effectively dealing with fiscal reality. Perhaps we need a study of some likely scenarios.

Karen Foote - May 27, 2011

Thank you for creating a plan that can reduce the national debt to nothing eventually. Now will anyone buy into the ideas and pass the legislation? The government is out of control and has no strong leadership to push legislation through to completion. And if is were passed, would this President sign it into law? I am for any plan that puts the country on a debt reduction path by reducing government spending, cutting programs that are no longer necessary or are duplicated, reducing personnel who are no longer needed, and not raising taxes on everything that moves. Thank you for all that you do. I am not able to discuss your plan or completely understand it all, but think we need to start now and with some kind of plan that heads in the right direction.

Joseph T Ciervo - May 27, 2011

Heritage is already making a huge difference, if we stick together we can save the “American Dream”. I hope more and more people join us, stength isin numbers. Sincerely Joseph T Ciervo

TO SAVE AMERICA WE MUST DO THREE THINGS
ABOLISH THE 16TH AND 17TH AMENDMENT
GET RID OF THE FEDEERAL RESERVE ACT
ADD THE GOLD STANDARD LOST IN 1971 THE ABOVE THREE THINGS WELOST IN L913

John Hazzeltine - May 27, 2011

Good job Heritage.
As the bromide goes: “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.” Education of the public and policy makers is much needed, and Heritage is making good headway on that front, yet the voters will ultimately decide if they cherish self responsibility and freedom over handouts and loss of freedom.

Robert S. McCaulley - May 27, 2011

Not unless the Republican Party can regain both houses.Until then we’re just whistling Dixie.

Peter Boonstra - May 27, 2011

Heritage may have best plan in the world but if most people
want more handouts instead of less then that plan isn’t much good. Look who good elected because people on Medicare wouldn’t give an inch? Most people are not so nice as you think. They are only interested in how well their pocketbook is doing. I think also that most people are very stupid in managing their money. They buy things they cannot afford and refuse to plan for old age financially and AARP says those who work hard and do save for old age must pay those who didn’t. Watch the Suze Orman show on TV and the Dave Ramsey show on radio and you’ll know what I am talking about,.

Thebarber - May 27, 2011

If the congress ever did adopt your budget plan, I don’t think it would make it past those idiots in the senate

Dr. Henry D. Sinopoli - May 27, 2011

No…

Sally Yust - May 27, 2011

I was very impressed with Stuart Butler’s economic plan that would balance the budget in ten years. Heritage has the brightest and the best. We do need a strong military for defense. We do need to deal with entitlements.
I’m grateful for all Heritage does and I hope your influence will continue to abound.

Larry Marsh - May 27, 2011

I don’t know if ANYONE can save the U.S. I fear we may have crossed the line identified by Alexander Tyler (or Tytler) who reportedly opined that a democracy can exist only until those receiving government largess find out they can vote themselves more. It appears that we have more people receiving largess than paying taxes.
But I certainly wish Heritage the absolute best in trying to help.
Or, as the caustic bumper sticker said years ago:
The War on Poverty is Over . . . POVERTY WON!

Sam Weaver - May 28, 2011

Together, we CAN save the American Dream. So-called “progressives” captured the stronghold of American education. From there, they took control of media, courts, bureaucracies, and even churches. If we are to save the American Dream, it MUST begin with recapturing the stronghold of education–the entire system!! Focus on that, and we will save American Liberty & Justice!

archie higgins the WASP - May 28, 2011

just about like obummer saved America…if the cowards in this country will stand up now…then Holder was right….remember only whites are cowards

Sonja Thompson - May 28, 2011

I do believe it is a start to reducing this awful debt, however, I must say that many politicians are not trustworthy. The budget must contain a balanced budget amendment which the attorneys cannot surcumvent like they so often do. And, stop the President from using so many executive orders for everything!!!!What a mess we have in Washington!! It’s a good start to a tough situation. We also believe members of Congress must have term limits, so they can be exposed to the laws they pass. We must have new blood in Congress, and their benefits and security must be reformed as well. We cannot continue to attract the type of people we do to serve the American people in Congress, when their goal is to have a free ride economically once elected. This must be reformed, and term limits would accomplish this. I would ask that you check into what this costs America annually and post for the country to see. The only consideration for the elderly that must be made is: How will they survive paying for health insurance when Social Security is their only income? Many have not been to college but have worked hard all their lives. Many do not have retirements, because so many companies have let them go right before retirement contributions kick in. My husband is a case in point. Big companies have been doing this forever, so why don’t we have strong laws about this? CEOs slash and burn the work force to look good on Wall Street. If our government is for the worker, why has this NOT been addressed?
We definitely do not have a free market system anymore, because so much is controlled; so, control smartly with the average American in mind, where the rich bosses cannot take advantage of them. If this were accomplished, you would have less on Medicare and Social Security, and Americans would have some sort of employer retirement program.
Please suggest this……we are struggling out here.
Sincerely,
Sonja Thompson

My wife and I are both 87years old. We lived and suffered during the 1930s depression and later earned lower wages all our lives.. We have saved, denying ourselves many things so we would have enought for our later years and that we would not be a buden to our chldren. Now you propose to make us give up again that which we earned and saved for ourselves and our children so as to give more to others who lived richly and failed to save. This seems to me to be Communism at its worst.

Judith A. Meadows - May 28, 2011

I admire the foundation for its efforts to inform the public as to its budget recommendations. If that were all you had to do, no doubt our economy would be on solid ground in no time. But we all know that even the best proposals have very little chance of advancing at least until the ’12 elections. But KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!

Lesley Hand - May 28, 2011

Heritage can help to educate us on the issues but the general population or at least a lesser educated group who elect the liberals do not support this type of conservative movement. I fear that without broader based support the politicians may not have the reslove to take the necessary steps til it is too late.

David M Stroupe - May 28, 2011

Heritage’s plan will work only if the american voter can be educated to see the current government is running this country into the ground. The problem is voter ignorance.

Bruce Troth - May 28, 2011

I have printed and read the Hertiage proposal. It seems to be a good one and this article supports it may well be in deed.

Since I am just a regular citizen it seems somewhat complex and hard to comprend. I don’t really believe the problem, large govt is complicated its just presented that way.

Siimply put, less govt is the light that has always shined brightest in America. And America has always been the brightest light that shines in the world.

John Wiant - May 28, 2011

OK, so how do we get that (Heritage) plan into the hands of Michele Bachman and Sarah Palin (the likely next PRES. and V.P. of this (soon to be great Again) United States?!
:)

Frank Crowhurst - May 28, 2011

I believe that your plan on Saving the American Dream will give congress a plan to follow and the reasons to stay with the plan until we have a balanced budget. I am sure that most Congressmen and Senators haven’t the time nor willingness to study why we should reduce our spending but with your plan spread in front of them, they can follow it and understand why and how they should vote on reducing spending. Thank you for Saving the American Dream.

Richard Peasel - May 28, 2011

Cutting Spending is good, but where are the jobs going to come from to meet the demands of an exploding population. Where is the wealth going to come from to satisfay the needs, appetite, and desires of an exploding population. In the 1950′s there was roughly about 150 million people working in fields like typing, file clerks, secretaries, factories, keypunchers, comp operators, telephone operators, fast food car hops, accountants, bookeepers, and yes there were programmers, and computers back then also.

In the 1960′s a large auto factory employed 5 to 10 thousand people depending on product. Today an auto mobile factory requires only about 2,000 due to automation. Today factories in appliances, communications, entertainment, and computers have all moved oversears along with a technology transfer.
In the 1960′s Corporations required dozens of both high school and college educated accountants for a factory. Today with computerization a corporation requires only a hand full of accountants to meet their global requiredments for dozen of factories . Today this hand full of college train accountants employments is being transfer to China, India, and Mexico. Today the major growth industry is medical care, but medical care will not create wealth, but only redistribute the wealth from the sick and dying to the young and hardy. Today mass unemployment is fast becoming a structural part of the US economy.

Today Corporations are transferring financial, purchasing, It, and engineering jobs to Mexico, and in return Mexico is transferring their unskilled and uneducated. Today the USA not only has a Trade deficit in Exports & Inports, but we are developing a trade deficit in labor also. Can we keep cutting enough to meet the demands of an uneducated work force transformation.

I have not seen a labor plan like the budget plans presented. A labor plan would not solve only the budget problem, but also poverty, crime, welfare, employment, grow the middle class, and create a higher standard of living for everyone.

Balancing the budget by cutting spending, raising taxes, or meddling with the entitlement programs is like going on a diet. Every so often in the 80′s, 90′s, and now in the 20 teens the USA goes on a financial diet. However, like all diets we eventually put on trillions more after a starve off a few hundred billion or today a trillion . The only permanent fix is a employment plan to meet a population growth that is estimated to grow almost 20% in he next 40 years. The only pemanent fix is an employment plan to balance the budget of a nation’s growing uneducated poplulation.

R. K. Smith - May 28, 2011

I agree with Stossel.

Kenneth Carter - May 28, 2011

The ADP is outstanding. I am a disabled veteran. I became disabled after my service but I had carried disability insurance which basically was expensive and I was forced by law to apply for social security disability so the insurance was a rip-off. How would this effect that kind of situation for those like me in the future ?

Barbara Tyndall - May 28, 2011

My husband thinks that the message is like reading a college textbook. He is concerned that it needs to be addressed to the average American, i.e. Joe the Plumber.
His suggested message to retirees is “Yes, you and your employees paid into a trust fund for future benefits. However, Congress robbed the trust fund for other projects and replaced it with worthless I.O.U.’s. Your money has been spent.”

Maria Schultheis - May 28, 2011

I am just watching this program right now, as I am checking my e-mail, and you gave me a preview of the result. Stuart Butler is dominating the judge’s interest and the audience’s attention. I believe he is correct. His ideas could work if they would be well implemented. Butler provided a serious and realistic explanation about an expensive budget for the Military. Butler and the Heritage Foundation well deserved the award for the best budget plan. Great show!

John Mutchler - May 29, 2011

Yes, I believe that the budget solution proposed by Heritage is pointed in the right direction. Too bad that Heritage is not running the country, though, as I fear we are all in for trying financial times in the weeks and months ahead. Kudos to Heritage’s Stuart Butler for his performance!

Rex Whitmer - May 29, 2011

I watched the program though I couldn’t just sit and watch it, but I gathered that you presented the so called “Fair Tax” as your plan. This plan is used in Europe and several Central and South American states. This is a hidden tax and has the governmental advantage of hiding the rate from the consumers. With the “Fair Tax” there is still opportunity for the wealthy to skirt around their libilities. The “Flat Tax” is the only fair and open tax! Every one pays the same rate no matter how much they earn. There are no deductions and no end of the year taxes to pay. Businesses would have to lay their books open, but there would be no funds going to tax deductible organizations. If welfare is decided to be needed it will be paid after the recipient has paid taxes on whatever they earn! I personally donate a significant portion of my earnings to my church and other organizations. These bodies are best to handle the needy. We are now coming up on our fourth generation of welfare families that are generally families of a single female parent, leaving the “father” portion of growing into adulthood as a mystery! We are all citizens, and should all be paying into the system where as less than half now pay into the system and many of those live off the system! For a socialist nation, the “Fair Tax” will seem benefitial, but in a free society, we should all pay! I was born at the end of the “Depression” and I can tell you that my father would rather have died than to accept “charity” from the government or anyone else. In those days, we were still free. Roosevelt invented “Big Brother” and he lives on with all the leaders since.

Brian A. Wechsler - May 29, 2011

Bob Beckel should be ashamed of himself. I guess this Beltway Elitist is ok with the state government cesspools in NY, IL, etc but chooses to use decades old liberal stereotypes attacking MS, LA (my adopted home state since I disowned my true home state, NY). Coincidentally, LA/MS have prospered recently under Conservative administrations and both are RIGHT TO WORK states, while NY/IL continue spiraling out of control because of Liberal insanity and Big Union control. As his Conservative brother claims, Bob was dropped on his head as a child, and yes I applaud his work to help other recovering alcoholics.

JW Estes - May 29, 2011

Yes, the Heritage Plan could save our nation from financial ruin if and when it is actually implemented as laid out. It will take some time to undo some of the economic faux pas that have become the norm in our society like overspending and NOT balancing the budget year-on-year. Several States, including CA have a balace budget clause in their constitutions – why the heck doesn’t the Fed??
JW – Texas

Jim and Nancy Guest - May 29, 2011

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of the American people and values. The effort to restore the American Dream is an odyssey that will take decades — probably half a century — of re-educating our population about how to appreciate and safeguard our freedoms and electing men and women that will care about the ‘Dream’. Don’t get tired.

charles watson - May 29, 2011

no1, anyone who wants this vietnam vet to tighten his belt anymore should be fired. All those who have spent the social security money should have to put their retirement money into social security. Why is the congress exempt and separate from the people? The problem with donations is that the money always goes to the management of the programs and very little goes to the cause.Get the military doctors and nurses to take care of our citizens and have them protect our borders. We already pay our military and they get most of the budget.Anytime there is a war fuel prices go up and the economy goes down. What did Isenhower say, beware of the military industrial complex. We can”t afford free trade and can’t compete with a billion Chinese and India. Tax every item a penny and give that to our people or give us our jobs back. We are fighting for big business overseas. Let them pay Black Water Security . They chose to get cheap labor and get out of ohsha and taxes. Our military is to protect the people not the drug companies and Big oil. I Don’t expect this to be posted but it is a true acount of how we feel in this area and we expect our leaders to do what is expected and take care of people first not the budget. The Bible says feed your enemy. There are Billions of people to be fed maybe that’s one way to get money for our economy besides War. Thanks for listening .

Charles Watson Sr.

Cynthia N Smith - May 29, 2011

Yes, I think Heritage can save the American Dream! I watched the presentation and Heritage’s plan was absolutely on the money. Thank you for looking out for the “folks”. Now if you could just get those in DC to follow your plan!!

Cora Lee Schingnitz - May 29, 2011

The Heritage Foundation can save the America Dream, but we must be much more willing to cut than was indicated on Stossle last night. We have to cut entire programs and departments.

William W. Mason Jr - May 29, 2011

Since so many politicans are governed by the media it would be great if the media would do their journalistic jobs or be embarrassed to do such by advertisments.

V Colclasure - May 30, 2011

I believe that the American Dream has to be taught to be saved. Immigrants, illegals, and school children (many now graduated) do not know what it is, where it came from, or what it means. It can be saved if these people are inspired by the work, sacrifice, and vision of the founding fathers and some of those who followed in their footsteps. — Otherwise, it cannot.

neil nichols - May 30, 2011

Not mentioned often enough is that Paul Ryan’s plan mentions Heritage as part of the research he and staff used to arriving at his plan. That in itself is a first for any think tank. Heritage, as members know well, has its eye on spending and the bloat in Government not pandering to special interests. The “Saving the American Dream” win is well deserved. Steady on course Heritage.

Chuck Keltch - May 30, 2011

Yes. Selling it to congress is the problem. Congress is not looking out for US.

Debra Leichenauer - May 30, 2011

Right now, The Heritage foundation is my only hope for the country, its citizens freedom, liberty and the pursuant of happiness. I am a Libertarian/constitutionalist. I am voting for Ron Paul, the only other person not bent on destroying this country any further than it has been by the Socialist/Democratic and Rhino’s. I just wish more people would take note that everything Ron Paul has said has been true and nothing for any GOP or democrat to look down upon him for. I am sick of the snobs even in the media, who pretend to care and yet they give away our freedom for the faulse take of safety. The Patriot Act again? TSA intrutions, 5 wars while our borders are being invaded? I could go on. But Thank you for at least trying to make them follow our constitution and declaration of independance.

Barb H. - May 30, 2011

I am hoping that our politicians have the courage to balance the budget and phase in fiscally responsible changes in the entitlement programs.

If politicians don’t start doing what Heritage is fighting for along with hard working Americans, then no Heritage cannot save the dream, politicians in power have to do what’s right! I think it’s that simple.

I saw the Stossel program. No one, including Heritage, mentioned that entitlements, ALL entitlement programs, are unconstitutional, and ultimately, should be eliminated. You are all saving programs that involve taking (by force- taxation) the money from some people to give to others. It is immoral and wrong. The American Dream does not involve entitlements. It involves leaving us free to pursue our goals.

I have been a porsche fan for many years and always “dreamed” of owning one. I never had the money when I was young so I kept dreaming. Years later when I had the money to buy one I found that it was better to keep the dream alive than to buy one. The expectations of reaching the American is what we must keep alive because material things can never make a dream come true.

Heritage can save the American Dream because they operate with honesty, character, and common sense.
These are the only traits required for intelligent people to arrive at conclusions that will work – and you have the intelligent people.
