Military Capability

Restoring our military capability.

The world is becoming a much more dangerous place – for Americans and for freedom.  It is essential that America be capable of protecting the nation and its citizens. Our armed forces must be ready to act anywhere in the world where vital national interests are threatened. This can be achieved only by giving the military the resources it needs to keep us safe and maintain freedom.

But America is heading rapidly towards a “hollow military” like that of the 1970s, unable to deal with threats from abroad. In 10 years, we could see America become as weak as it was under Jimmy Carter. It is essential that the government should spend a minimum of four percent of the gross domestic product on the armed forces. Heritage’s Four Percent for Freedom initiative would fund modernization, equipment maintenance and upgrades, salaries and benefits, and everything else to ensure our men and women in uniform remain the best-equipped, best-trained fighting force in the world.

We need to continue to develop a broad range of missile defense initiatives, and continue to develop weapons to meet future threats.
