In Detroit, taxpayers spend $11,100, more than $1,500 the national average, to educate each pupil. The high spending, however, does not correlate with high performance. In fact, with only a 25% graduation rate, Detroit students have a greater chance of going to jail than graduating high school.

The Southeast Michigan Committee had a panel discussion entitled How Michigan Can Improve Education During the Current Fiscal Crisis.  Joe Lehman, President of Mackinac Center for Public Policy and Lindsey Burke, Domestic Policy Studies, The Heritage Foundation, presented real term education reforms that will benefit students in Michigan.
