Heritage’s immigration impact

June 12, 2007| By Nathaniel Ward

Since the misguided Senate immigration proposal was introduced at the end of May, Heritage Foundation experts worked hard to ensure Congress and the American people understood the consequences of such legislation.

Here’s a quick overview of their work on immigration in the past few weeks:

  • 100—Newspaper and magazine articles around the country citing Heritage experts and their research, including the nation’s top newspapers and leading syndicated columnists
  • 40—Expert appearances on radio, from local shows to national programs like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham and even National Public Radio
  • 32—Number of times Heritage experts appeared or were cited on television networks like Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC and PBS
  • 13—Research papers published by Heritage experts and delivered to members of Congress and their staffs since the proposal’s unveiling.
  • 11—Commentary articles written by Heritage experts, appearing in The Chicago Sun-Times, The Wall Street Journal, FoxNews.com, National Review Online and more

Congress has come to rely on Heritage and its research. This point was driven home by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) when he thanked Heritage for bringing the legislation to the public’s attention. “Thank goodness they did make it public,” he said during remarks on the Senate floor.

Unfortunately, some in Congress and the Bush administration seem keen to continue their drive for “reform” on the specious grounds that any bill would be better than the status quo. Heritage experts will keep a close eye on any developments even as we push for common-sense reform.
