Immigration update

June 1, 2007| By Nathaniel Ward

Heritage experts have been busy these past few days getting the word out on the Senate’s immigration plan.

See Heritage’s impact on media coverage of immigration—in more than 25 television clips and 80 newspaper articles!

Here’s the latest on what Heritage has been up to on this important issue:

  • Heritage analysts continue to brief lawmakers in Congress and Bush administration officials about the consequences of the immigration proposal now under consideration. And they continue to make the case for a principled immigration reform that secures our borders, enforces the law, welcomes legal immigrants, and does not provide amnesty for lawbreakers.
  • The immigration bill before the Senate would expand the duties of the government agency tasked with processing those granted amnesty—without ensuring the agency is up to the job, James Carafano writes in a new analysis. “A more efficient, fair, and cost-effective strategy would be to reject amnesty, establish adequate legal opportunities to work and live in the United States, and appropriate funds to modernize USCIS systems and business practices.”
