How Congress uses Heritage research
May 15, 2007| By Nathaniel Ward
One of The Heritage Foundation’s primary missions is to educate lawmakers about conservative principles and how they play into current policy debates. With that in mind, Heritage experts ran the numbers and calculated the tax increase each Congressional district would face under the liberals’ budget proposal.
Members of Congress were quick to use this research to explain the problem with the liberal budget. Here are just a few statements from lawmakers citing Heritage’s analysis:
- Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ): “New data just released by the non-partisan Heritage Foundation shows that the average per-taxpayer hike in the 5th Congressional District will amount to a stunning $4,904 per year by 2012. The study also projects that this plan would cost the 5th District 2,327 jobs and a whopping $354,000,000.”
- Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO): “This recent report by the Heritage Foundation is a sobering prediction for the American people and my constituents in Colorado Springs. I hope that my colleagues across the aisle heed its warnings before inflicting harm on our economy and citizens.”
- Rep. Connie Mack (R-FL): “If the Democrats’ budget is enacted, the average tax increase will be over $3,300 for Southwest Florida taxpayers, according to the Heritage Foundation. That’s astonishing.”
- Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI): “As a recent Heritage Foundation study reveals, their plan institutes a $3,019 tax increase for the typical Michigander and embraces a ‘spend now, reform later’ mentality.”
