A note from Lady Thatcher
September 18, 2006| By Margaret Thatcher
We were honored here at Heritage two weeks ago when Lady Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister, joined us in Washington to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation. While she was here, the Heritage Board of Trustees recognized her years of dedication to the conservative movement and her generous support of our work by naming her the first-ever Patron of The Heritage Foundation.
Lady Thatcher asked me to pass along the following note to Heritage members.
I write to you at a time of deep uncertainty—on both sides of the Atlantic.
Fifteen years ago, America and Britain stood side by side to defeat the evils of communism. Today we stand together again as we face the evils of international terrorism. At home we have done much to beat back the almost relentless expansion of big government while standing firm behind those traditions and values many on the Left seek to undermine.
We are fortunate that in The Heritage Foundation we have an organisation committed to defending and restoring sound conservative principles. Heritage’s work in preserving those traditional values which have underpinned our society has been crucial in the past and remains vital for the future. That is why I have chosen Heritage to carry forward my legacy in the United States. With the creation of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom last year at The Heritage Foundation I hope that these ideals of liberty which Ronald Reagan and I held dear will be taken up by the next generation—and generations beyond.
The Heritage Foundation has accomplished so much over the years. It has a proven commitment to the conservative cause and a strong vision of how to revivify that cause to meet the challenges ahead. I shall be working closely with them to ensure that those values and beliefs we share continue to be the guiding lights for the future and I invite you to join me and The Heritage Foundation in this great task.
Sincerely,
Margaret Thatcher
